Respite night for special needs children
Respite night is held every other month at the First Congregational Church, 1425 N. Fifth St. from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. Call 242-0298 or 243-4509 to reserve a spot. If anyone is interested in starting a night for the in-between months, training is available.

Movies Under the Stars begins
Movies Under the Stars is back for the summer! Bring the family for an enjoyable evening in the great outdoors and under the stars at these events, which benefits the Glade Park Volunteer Fire Department. Although admission to the movies is free, there will be food, snacks and beverages for sale. The movies take place most Fridays during the summer at the Glade Park Fire Station, 16400 DS Rd, Glade Park. Movie begins at dusk. Bring your lawn chairs and/or blankets and warm clothing. Call

Heritage Day at Cross Orchards Historic Site
This “blast from the past” features antique cars, blacksmithing, rocks and minerals, gold panning, Native American skills, flint knapping, rope braiding, quilting, trains and so much more. Costumed interpreters at the Museum’s Cross Orchards Historic Site offer you the opportunity to step back into time. 20 Player Chess Challenge
Damian Nash, the 2010 Utah state chess champion, will attempt to play as many as 20 players at the same time during this “Chess Challenge” at the Mesa County Libraries Central Library, 530 Grand Ave. The challenge is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the downstairs Program Room. Nash’s current record is 92 wins, two draws, and no losses. Those interested in being one of the challengers should call Mesa County Libraries at 243-4442 to register. There is no charge for the event and is open to the public.

Colorado State Cowboy Action Shooting Championship
Thunder Mountain Shootists host this year’s Single Action Championship at the William Jarvis Shooting Complex, 3220 Reeder Mesa Rd. in Whitewater. The competition takes place from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and is free for spectators. Call 261-7985 or 523-7299 for more information.

Ronstadt Generations at KAFM
Radio Room
Come experience the unique musical sound of Ronstadt Generations in the KAFM Radio Room at 7 p.m. Ronstadt Generations represents the multi-cultural roots America was founded upon. Dating back five generations in North America, Michael J. Ronstadt, younger brother of Linda Ronstadt, continues the family tradition with his two sons, Michael G. and Petie, along with Josh Hisle, referred to fondly as his adopted son. These four voices bring to life a repertoire that reaches back to the end of the 19th century while continually looking ahead into the 21st, with a rich innovation of original material alongside traditional Southwestern and Mexican songs. Community Cinema: Two Spirits
Fred Martinez was one of the youngest hate-crime victims in modern history when he was brutally murdered at age 16. Two Spirits explores the life and death of a boy and the essentially spiritual nature of gender. Join us for a pre-movie reception at 6:30 p.m. with the movie starting at 7 p.m. Admission is free. Boulder Brass concert
Enjoy an evening of music and relaxation at Grande River Vineyards as part of their “Hear it Through the Grapevine” summer concert series. The first performance of the summer is by the Boulder Brass. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. and show starts at 7:30 p.m. Bring enough lawn chairs for the family. Wine is available by the glass or bottle. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Anyone can participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, and anyone can form their own teams. Yoga, a gift to all, for all! Celebrate the gardens at their peak at the Western Colorado Botanical Gardens, located at 641 Struthers Ave. The Frank Bregar Orchestra featuring Krystyn Hartman will perform big band jazz, light rock and other styles in the front lawn gardens. This three-event go-kart race series highlights the efforts of our military, fireman, police and other first responders. Centennial Band concert
The Grand Junction Centennial Band will play their second performance of the summer in the main courtyard west of the Moss Performing Arts Center building at Mesa State College. The performance starts at 7:30 p.m. The band’s music changes for every concert, so the audience never gets the same performance twice. Bring your lawn chair, blanket, food and family to this wonderful evening of music under the stars. The parking garage will be available for free parking. (Can’t beat FREE Parking!)

CSU Extension canning workshops
The Colorado State University Extension will be hosting a two-day, hands-on canning workshop in Grand Junction for individuals wanting to learn how to can and preserve food. Day one of the workshop will cover canning basics and water bath canning procedures. Day two will cover pickling and pressure canning procedures. The class will take place at the Business Incubator Center, located at 2591 B 3/4 Rd. The class starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. both days. Cost is $50 for both days and includes a food preservation cookbook, or only $25 for one day, not including the cookbook. For more information, contact the CSU Extension office at 244-1834.
